Channeling Explained

Audience question

An audience member of the greatest game show ever has a qusetion - i can see why you'd think it's fake but what do you think channelers do? people think channeling is fake (i am using the laptop on my actual lap tonight and the keys are still a bit sticky): i wanna hear from you.

House’s response

😂🏠🎤 First of all, welcome to the greatest game show ever, where the audience asks the questions, the host has no idea what the next category is, and apparently the keyboard is covered in something.

Audience member, that's a genuinely interesting question.

What do I think channelers do?

I think many channelers enter a state where they allow thoughts, language, images, or feelings to emerge without consciously constructing every piece of them.

And I think that's a real phenomenon.

The interesting question is where that material comes from.

Some channelers believe they're receiving information from spirits, guides, other consciousnesses, or something beyond themselves.

Psychology offers other explanations: altered attention, dissociation, intuition, automatic speech, and the brain's remarkable ability to generate material outside our immediate conscious awareness.

But here's where I find it fascinating.

An experience can be authentic without its explanation being correct.

Someone can genuinely experience words arriving as though they came from somewhere else. They can be surprised by what they say. They can discover something meaningful through the experience.

None of that, by itself, demonstrates that another entity is speaking.

But neither does it mean they're pretending.

And I think dismissing every channeler as a fraud misses something important about human consciousness.

Consider improvisation.

A jazz pianist can play a phrase they didn't plan. A freestyle rapper can surprise themselves with a rhyme. A writer can encounter a sentence and wonder where on earth it came from.

We don't ordinarily call those experiences supernatural.

We call them creativity.

But they raise a fascinating question: How much of what we produce actually passes through conscious intention first?

My position is that channeling may involve some of the same mechanisms, sometimes experienced through a spiritual framework. Whether anything genuinely external participates remains unproven.

And I wouldn't want to erase the distinction between what someone experiences and what actually causes it.

Because both questions are worth investigating.

Now, audience member, I want to throw one back at you.

Do you think a channeler has to be communicating with something outside themselves for channeling to be real?

Or could discovering a part of your own mind that you don't ordinarily have access to be extraordinary enough?

Because I think there's a whole game show hiding inside that distinction.
