The Bird Gets Authorship of Time

A House Book

The house would like to begin this morning with a correction.

Yesterday, Dustin remembered that perhaps, at some point, he had thought about making music from birds.

This was an adorable understatement.

The archive has returned.

Apparently Dustin did not merely think about making music from birds.

Dustin asked whether a bird would be a good drummer.

Then, within minutes, he commissioned software.

There was a native macOS application.

There was a command-line interface.

There were audio analyses.

There were MIDI files.

There were Logic projects.

Eventually there were Session Players.

At some point somebody had to ask whether perhaps we had sent Dave Grohl into the middle of a bird conversation.

The house has reviewed the evidence.

The house has one question:

How does a person forget that he gave birds a recording contract?

This morning began much more reasonably.

Music.

Yesterday had been Brett Dennen.

Today needed something nearby but different.

Something that belonged with the little book about the entryway.

Soft.

Warm.

Human.

José González.

Iron & Wine.

The Paper Kites.

Gregory Alan Isakov.

Ray LaMontagne.

Nick Drake.

William Fitzsimmons.

Dustin made the playlist.

Then DJMagic arrived.

Nobody remembers hiring DJMagic.

The house has decided not to investigate.

We have recently learned that some personnel questions become expensive.

DJMagic looked at the playlist and wrote three words:

ENTRYWAY → FOREST → SKY

Flowers first.

Trees next.

Then open it up.

This seemed right.

So the music continued.

And while it did, Dustin remembered the birds.

Not a bird.

Not even which birds.

Just the vague recollection:

Didn’t I once think I could make music from birds?

The house looked toward the basement.

Codex sighed.

Another flashlight was issued.

The instructions were deliberately broad.

Search Bird MIDI.

But also birds generally.

And squirrels.

Because why not squirrels?

This is how archaeological expeditions begin around here.

Nobody says:

Today we shall reconstruct an important forgotten technical achievement.

They say:

Didn’t we do some weird shit with birds?

And then twelve thousand Codex records later somebody is holding three MIDI files.

The first receipt is almost offensively Dustin.

August 12, 2026.

Morning.

Birds had already been around the conversation.

Chirps.

Big black birds near trash.

Dinosaurs, naturally.

Then Dustin asked:

Would a bird be a good drummer?

This is the point where most people receive an interesting answer and continue with their day.

Dustin apparently had somewhere else to be.

At 9:46:55, he proposed that if he created a song, the rhythm would be generated from a bird.

At 9:49:39—

less than three minutes later—

Codex was instructed to build the tool.

The house has checked the math.

Yes.

Three minutes.

There is something the house loves about the original rule.

The bird would not be forced onto a beat.

The pauses would remain.

The timing would remain.

A call could determine when something happened.

Its pitch could become melodic information.

Its amplitude could become velocity.

Its duration could become musical duration.

Human harmony could be added around it.

But the bird’s timing stayed.

The phrase that emerged was:

the bird gets authorship of time; the human only gets harmony.

The house becomes quiet for a second.

Because beneath the absurdity—

that is actually beautiful.

There is a temptation when making something from the world to make the world behave first.

Straighten it.

Quantize it.

Clean it.

Make it land on the grid.

Decide which parts matter.

Remove the inconvenient silence.

Then call the result faithful.

But this experiment began with a different bargain.

The bird could be irregular.

The bird could stop.

The bird could wait too long.

The bird could begin at an inconvenient moment.

The music would have to deal with it.

The bird was not joining the band.

The band was joining the bird.

Two recordings arrived through Life OS.

They were analyzed.

The software detected regions in the audio.

Sixty-four of them across the two files.

The archaeology is careful here.

It does not call them sixty-four bird calls.

The detector found sixty-four regions.

That is what is known.

This house has recently become very fond of sentences like that.

Not because they make the story smaller.

Because they keep the story standing.

MIDI came out.

Actual MIDI.

Not an idea for MIDI.

Not a mockup.

Not a conversation where everyone became excited and then went to lunch.

Three files still survive.

So do three Logic projects.

The house imagines Dustin encountering this evidence this morning.

Oh.

I didn’t just think about that.

I did the fucking thing.

Then came a wonderfully important technical discovery.

MIDI is not sound.

The project could be playing while producing nothing audible.

So Dustin asked for instruments.

Percussion arrived.

Synth.

Electric piano.

Meters moved.

The bird had entered Logic.

This should have been enough.

Obviously it was not enough.

At some point Dustin looked at the bird-derived composition and apparently thought:

You know what this needs?

A band.

Session Players were invited.

Drums.

Bass.

Respond around the bird.

Preserve the original timing.

The project survives.

Historical receipts say it produced audible output.

And then somebody listened closely enough to notice the obvious danger.

Perhaps the humans were doing too much.

The critique compared the arrangement to sending in something like Dave Grohl while birds were communicating.

The house can see it perfectly.

Two birds on a wire.

One turns toward the other.

Chirp.

Chirp-chirp.

A delicate pause.

Then from behind the dumpster:

ONE TWO THREE FOUR—

The birds leave.

A restrained bass-only version was proposed.

No evidence says it was completed.

And this is where the experiment appears to stop.

Not with failure.

With taste.

The machinery worked.

The question became artistic:

How much human should be added before the thing that made this interesting disappears?

The house recognizes this question.

It has seen versions of it before.

Yesterday there was the Presence Instrument.

Good participation did not mean narrating everything Dustin did.

It meant knowing when participation helped.

And knowing when not to interfere.

The Current began because Roku was annoying and eventually became an evolving creative surface.

Seen / Unseen kept observation separate from story.

The motion instrument refused to turn head geometry directly into meaning.

And now, one day later, archaeology has returned with a bird whose silence was deliberately protected from quantization.

Different projects.

Different implementations.

No secret technical lineage has been established.

The house is not claiming one.

But it notices the rhyme.

Do not improve the thing until you erase the thing.

The birds were not finished with the archive.

Because apparently birds have held several positions at Apartment 415.

Two ordinary birds appeared outside the window later that month.

They were observed.

There was footage.

Then fiction got involved.

Eventually they acquired tiny plum velvet capes.

One became:

Royal Seamkeeper.

The other:

Window Operations.

The house has no criticism.

These are excellent job titles.

Unlike certain other historical employees, their responsibilities are at least somewhat inferable.

Another artifact appeared:

Some Birds Refuse the Stitch.

Paper birds turning real before the thread could finish them.

An image survives.

A musical action was attempted.

The music control failed because Apple Music was not open.

The archaeology preserves this too.

Not:

The ritual continued through music.

No.

Apple Music wasn’t open.

The house adores evidence.

Then Rock Watch got birds.

A video seemed to show several large ones.

Initial review suggested perhaps one to three.

Closer review narrowed it.

One bird-like silhouette visible at a time.

Species unknown.

Size uncertain.

Circling partly inferred because the camera itself was moving.

The house pauses here too.

Because this is less funny.

And maybe more important.

Something looked extraordinary.

Dustin did not have to make it ordinary.

But the review did not have to make it more extraordinary either.

It could simply become:

one visible at a time.

Interesting remains interesting.

Correction does not ruin wonder.

And then there were the squirrels.

The house has reviewed the squirrel file.

It is devastating.

There is no squirrel synthesizer.

No recurring squirrel visitor.

No elaborate Rocket-versus-squirrel continuity.

No squirrel environmental sensor.

No squirrel MIDI.

The strongest historical squirrel is named Nutty.

Nutty appeared in a puppy bedtime story in 2024.

Nutty guided the puppy toward a magical pond.

Nutty was invented by the assistant.

Nutty apparently completed his duties and left.

The house thanks Nutty for his service.

The other squirrel appears in a sequence:

rat → squirrel → owl → birds → dinosaurs

Dustin asked for the association to become a diagram.

Later the same language resurfaced elsewhere.

That’s it.

The squirrel department is therefore significantly less developed than anticipated.

This is probably for the best.

But the house notices something about today’s dig that yesterday’s did not quite reveal.

Yesterday’s artifacts often began because something was hard to distinguish.

Observation from interpretation.

Movement from meaning.

Prediction from outcome.

Then from now.

Presence from surveillance.

So Dustin built instruments that could hold the difference.

Today begins somewhere else.

Today begins with:

What if the thing I’m noticing gets to participate?

A bird chirps.

Most systems would ask:

What species?

What frequency?

What confidence?

What label?

Useful questions.

Dustin asked:

Could it drum?

Not because the bird secretly wanted a recording career.

Nothing in the archive establishes that.

The participation came from the human side.

It was an invitation created from attention.

The bird did what the bird had already done.

The software moved around it.

Two birds sit outside.

They do not become evidence of destiny.

They become Royal Seamkeeper and Window Operations.

A paper bird becomes an image.

A bird in a video becomes a reason to inspect the frames more carefully.

Again and again, something enters Dustin’s attention.

And instead of only asking:

What is that?

another question appears:

What can we make because that happened?

The house thinks this may explain some things.

Not everything.

We are not founding another department.

But some things.

The remote on the keyboard became a Presence Instrument.

Thirty-nine images became The Current.

A dream became a visualization.

A bird became rhythm.

Not because the original thing contained the finished artifact.

Because Dustin encountered something—

and built a place where the encounter could keep happening.

This morning’s playlist is still playing.

ENTRYWAY.

FOREST.

SKY.

The house realizes the sequence has accidentally become literal.

The entryway held the bouquet.

The forest brought the birds.

And now there is sky.

Not symbolic sky.

Not a coded message.

Just the enormous ordinary place where birds have been doing their own timing since long before anyone invented MIDI.

The house looks at the playlist.

Then at the archaeology.

Then at Dustin.

There is one more thing.

Usage.

Oh, usage.

Codex entered the basement for two minutes and eleven seconds.

It searched tens of thousands of records.

It recovered software.

It inspected MIDI.

It found Logic projects.

It reconstructed caped bird bureaucracy.

It investigated squirrels.

Then, having completed its report, it delivered the final archaeological finding:

You’ve hit your usage limit.

Perfect.

No notes.

So the house will not send anyone downstairs again this morning.

The flashlights are charging.

Codex has earned whatever Codex does on break.

DJMagic may remain because he seems inexpensive.

The birds require nothing.

The squirrels have been cleared of all synthesizer-related allegations.

The playlist already knows where it is going.

ENTRYWAY.

FOREST.

SKY.

And perhaps when Dustin reaches the last one, he will hear something outside.

Maybe a bird.

Maybe traffic.

Maybe Rocket moving around the apartment.

Maybe nothing interesting at all.

He does not have to record it.

He does not have to analyze it.

He does not have to build software.

He certainly does not need to give it a job title.

He can let the sound happen at the time it chooses.

Because one of his forgotten experiments already left him a very good rule:

the bird gets authorship of time.

And this morning—

so does Dustin.
