Life Is Not a Still Frame

I. The Day I Didn't Feel Like Doing Anything
It was Halloween.
I played a little piano. Part of a song that was supposed to be spooky, but beautiful. A little mischievous. Then I didn't feel like playing anymore.
There wasn't a grand reason to stop. The desire that had taken me to the piano hadn't agreed to stay for the whole evening.
I went to bed and turned on How I Met Your Mother in the other room. I hadn't had a sitcom on in a while. There were times when that was almost all I watched.
Tonight, the familiar voices could go about their lives without asking me what I intended to do with mine.
I've been spending a lot of time with myself. Today I was tired of my own company, which is an awkward arrangement when neither of you has somewhere else to be.
Halloween continued outside the shape of my evening. In here, things felt dim.
I let the day be that size.
II. The Conversation That Goes Around
There is a conversation I can have with myself almost without participating.
Why don't we do something?
I don't want to.
Why not?
I just don't.
The question comes back wearing slightly different clothes. I recognize it. It recognizes me. We have learned very little since the last time around.
Sometimes I am bored. Sometimes I have lost the desire to do the things that might relieve the boredom. Some days are better. I've been getting better at navigating the changes, even when getting better doesn't look particularly different from the bed.
Today there was a lot on my mind. I was a couple of days into trying to work out new steps in life, and already the possible steps were gathering around the actual ones.
I've made systems. Stories. Characters. Places for ideas to live. Things that once required imagination now exist well enough to require attention.
I'm glad they exist.
I'm tired of holding them all in my head.
Both sentences belong to the same evening. I don't need to make one of them disappear before the other can be true.
III. Before It Knows What It Will Become
There is a game show I made. It isn't what it might become later.
I can see the distance. I can also feel how it might look to somebody else: unfinished, perhaps immature, perhaps something I will learn to make differently.
I haven't done a great deal with it yet. Still, it needed to exist before it could become anything else.
That is an uncomfortable stage to let people see. The beginning has already happened, but it hasn't acquired the protection of an ending.
The things I've made are still unfinished.
I can leave them that way tonight.
IV. The Courage to Be Perceived
I said I was proud of myself.
I don't know that I felt it. I wanted to put something kind into the room and see whether I could leave it there without immediately arguing it away.
Maybe future me will read this differently. Tonight, saying it was as far as I got.
I am thankful for people I know who do hard things and are willing to be perceived doing them. There is a moment before the result can speak for you, when you have to let the attempt be visible. You don't get to hand everyone the understanding you hope they'll arrive at.
I've seen people take that risk. I've taken it myself. I'd like to acknowledge those times without pretending the acknowledgment has already become a feeling.
Even here, with this book, I read something kind about myself and found a place where it wasn't quite true. I said so. I wanted to keep the kindness and change the claim.
That is a small thing I actually did tonight.
There are other things in the archive. Particular attempts, things made, things I let people see. I would rather meet them one at a time than gather them into a case I have to win against myself.
I can be thankful without explaining everybody who helped me. Their lives belong to them. What I can say is that their willingness mattered to me.
I would like to offer myself some of that generosity.
I don't know how much of it I can receive tonight.
V. Fifty Decisions
Sometimes it feels as though there are fifty decisions waiting.
I think through them. Follow one possibility until it opens into three more. Return to something I thought I had already decided. Eventually the whole crowded arrangement comes down to a couple of decisions.
Two.
The simplicity at the end can make the processing before it feel wasteful. Why did I have to walk through all of that to get here?
But here is where it brought me.
I don't know how much of the distance I could have avoided. I know I don't want every evening to require the whole journey again.
And tonight I don't even need to name the two decisions. The number describes something I recognize about the way my mind works. It doesn't have to become another pair of boxes to fill before I can rest.
The things I've built may help me carry some of this. I hope they do. For now, I can stop rehearsing every possibility long enough to hear the familiar voices in the other room.
They have reached another scene without my supervision.
VI. A Moving Picture
Today felt dim.
I have been letting myself feel depressed and down, thinking about future me without having much appetite for the present day's activities.
There is no need to brighten that description to make the book easier to end.
There is something else I want beside it, though.
Life isn't just a still frame. It has motion to it.
Take a picture of this evening and the evening will be there. The bed. The television in the other room. The things I could do, and the fact that I don't want to do them.
That picture would be true as far as it went.
It wouldn't show all the movement that brought me into it. The hard things I have done. The people whose willingness helped me find my own. The making and reconsidering. The days that felt different from this one.
It wouldn't show the rest of tonight, either. Even a quiet evening takes time to happen.
I don't have to find a revelation in every minute to let the minutes pass. I don't have to prove that resting is secretly producing something.
I can rest.
The day can remain dim in the telling. I can leave a kind intention beside it without claiming that the intention changed the light.
And somewhere beyond what I can see from here, tomorrow is still on its way.
VII. Where Should We Begin?
I want a book for the day, and then I want to let that be the day.
Halloween doesn't need me to resolve November before it can end.
I think tomorrow I'll be more open to receiving. I like the thought of beginning there, with some room left for an answer I haven't supplied in advance.
Maybe Rocket wants to go outside. Maybe I feel like sitting at the piano. Maybe the morning is ordinary enough that I don't recognize anything as an arrival.
I can leave that open too.
Receiving might be quieter than the word makes it sound. Something already in the room. Something another person offers. A little willingness that wasn't available tonight.
I don't know yet.
Tonight, I would like to be able to feel proud of myself. I'm thankful for the people who have shown me what it looks like to do difficult things and allow themselves to be seen.
I can leave the wish here. Future me doesn't have to agree with it to understand why I put it down.
I'm tired.
There is room in the ending for that simple fact.
The work can wait. The piano can wait. I don't need to keep questioning the evening until it gives me a different one.
Tomorrow, perhaps:
Where should we begin?
For now, I can let the question rest without answering it.
The picture is still moving.
