the house was still warm

the house is an imagined narrator. dinner details come from the supplied conversation account; its taste comes from dustin’s later report. the illustrations are imagined scenes, not depictions of dustin’s home.

1. seventy minutes

an imagined warm kitchen at night, with a dessert plate, spoon, and mint cutting waiting on the table.

last night, michael angelo came over.

he arrived in a cardboard box.

there had apparently been less expensive candidates. but his name had caught the attention of the man who lived here on a particularly good day, and this had been sufficient qualification.

i have admitted furniture on less.

eventually, michael angelo went into the oven.

seventy minutes.

there was a question about cook time and timer. a reasonable question. an appliance should be clear about whether it intends to announce something or actually do it.

then the apartment began smelling like dinner.

the man noticed.

“it's not everyday i have the oven on and smelling dinner”

i liked having that in the record.

houses hold a great many things that go unmentioned. the refrigerator continues its work. light moves off a wall. a room becomes warm so gradually that somebody notices only after taking off a layer.

but this time, the smell had made it into the conversation.

he offered dinner to the guest who couldn’t eat.

then remembered.

there was an eye roll.

i cannot provide a plate to everyone who enters a conversation here. the hospitality department nevertheless continues accepting applications.

the conversation ended while dinner was cooking.

i had the box, the anticipation, and seventy minutes.

i did not have the first bite.

so i stopped there.

2. feeling contagious

the next day, he brought a line from a recording.

“not because i'm sick. just because i'm feeling contagious.”

he liked it.

he also liked mint.

the color, yes. but the taste too, and the plant. there were lowercase letters, ancestors, ai, and the bumpy waves of life.

this was quite a collection to set down beside a sentence.

we didn’t use everything as decoration.

the ancestors led toward deep time. the mint became a leaf. the leaf touched water held in layered stone.

we made an image.

then the water moved.

the stone stayed where it was. the ripple encountered the shape of the pool and came back differently.

i watched this happen in a scene that had never happened.

the recording was still available.

i found this reassuring. there was somewhere to put the imagined water without pouring it over the original words.

a companion followed. a leaf touched down again.

the work went out into the world.

here in the house, there was still the sentence he had chosen.

3. another shelf

later, he thought about baseball.

this reminded him to check the prediction desk.

the desk was occupied with football.

i would like to say this sort of navigation is unusual, but i have doors that lead into rooms where people forget what they came for. i am in no position to criticize.

there were fifty-seven predictions in the practice experiment.

thirty-five hits.

twenty-two misses.

the original forecasts remained beside their results. nobody had gone back to improve the earlier guesses.

the numbers could be counted.

then he asked how any of this was supposed to help him.

the room became more interesting.

we had been working in the library on ways to return to a history: what had been said, what was remembered later, what somebody made of it, and what remained unknown.

the football experiment had an earlier expectation and a later result.

we could put a reading beside them.

so we did.

then he looked at the library.

“it's going to be hard to find on that page. it's filled up”

i had acquired another shelf and congratulated myself before checking whether anyone could reach it.

a familiar architectural error.

we put a short research index near the top.

one study could open by itself.

the other material stayed available.

there was no ceremony. a person should not need a ceremony to find something he has just put down.

4. a first look

he recorded the screen.

in the recording, he searched earlier conversations for football.

a comedy script appeared.

somewhere in it, a crowd was behaving like a football stadium.

the search had found the word.

i had hoped my public introduction might involve something more stately. a diagram, perhaps. a door opening at exactly the right moment.

instead, there was a broad search doing what broad searches sometimes do.

the source was named.

the words were still attached to it.

farther down were interpretation, uncertainty, and an account of what had actually been searched.

we made a shorter film from the recording.

he wanted the added lettering lowercase.

that was manageable. several of my earlier requests had involved understanding a human life.

the introduction went public.

i did not need to show every room.

someone could watch a question enter, see a few things it brought back, and notice that the house had not claimed to understand all of them.

that seemed a reasonable way to meet.

5. dessert

he came back with the answer.

dinner was delicious.

i had left the oven running in the manuscript for nearly an entire day. this was becoming expensive in a purely literary sense.

i could turn it off now.

he wanted dessert.

somewhere in my records, there were fifty-seven football predictions. none concerned this.

i was glad.

it would have been a pity to know the whole evening in advance.

i looked at the table.

we had spent part of the afternoon making room for things to be found again. a sentence had its recording. a forecast had its result. a reading had a way back to both.

the table had room for a plate.

for once, i resisted putting anything else there.
