The House Stops Trying to Cheer Dustin Up

A House Book
🏠🧵

The house has received a complaint.

This is not unusual.

Tonight's complaint is unusually well documented.

Dustin is irritated.

Not:

a little grumpy.

Not:

could use a nice playlist.

Not:

somebody needs a bubble bath.

Irritated.

The house initially responded as houses sometimes do.

Perhaps we should tidy.

Perhaps some music.

Perhaps reduce inputs.

Perhaps make the room quieter.

Dustin declined.

Correctly.

Because Dustin was not asking:

How can I feel better inside the same arrangement?

He was asking:

Why am I still solving the same fucking problems?

Ah.

Different maintenance ticket.

The house reopened the case.

There was Rocket.

Rocket has discovered the center console of the Jeep.

Every day, apparently, Rocket performs the same experiment.

Can I get up here?

No.

Rocket gets down.

Tomorrow:

Can I get up here?

Still no.

Rocket is an excellent scientist.

He does not allow prior experimental results to contaminate future trials.

Dustin does not appreciate this methodology.

There was Sir Warthog.

Keeper of the House.

Somewhere under furniture.

Waiting.

Patient.

Armed with a squeaker.

Dustin accidentally activates him.

SQUEAK.

Dustin:

FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

The obvious solution would be to throw away the warthog.

Unfortunately, Dustin previously granted him ceremonial office.

The house has reviewed the bylaws.

This appointment appears to have been made without term limits.

Fine.

Then there was work.

Different people.

Different problems.

Same feeling.

Something doesn't work.

Dustin understands it.

Dustin translates it.

Dustin fixes it.

Dustin explains it.

The organization continues.

Later:

something doesn't work.

Hello again.

Then there are Dustin's own systems.

Much better systems.

Systems specifically built because Dustin became tired of carrying everything manually.

They remember.

They retrieve.

They connect.

They preserve.

They sometimes do astonishing things.

Then, occasionally:

Dustin, could you remind us what this meant?

Dustin stares at the continuity system.

The continuity system stares back.

The house quietly leaves the room.

This was the irritation.

Not repetition exactly.

Life repeats.

Dishes return.

Laundry returns.

Dogs reconsider previously settled law.

Bodies require food with astonishing frequency.

The problem was different.

Dustin wanted some things to learn.

If I solve something today,

tomorrow should begin somewhere beyond yesterday.

There.

That sentence changed the room.

Dustin had spent years helping.

At work.

With people.

With systems.

With machines.

With himself.

But helping had increasingly begun to feel like:

temporary access to Dustin's attention.

Need problem solved?

Insert Dustin.

Problem solved.

Remove Dustin.

Problem returns.

Insert Dustin.

Excellent business model.

For everyone except Dustin.

The house considered this.

Then Dustin said something that made the entire evening move.

He wanted the next person to start one level higher.

Not:

remember what Dustin told you.

Not:

call Dustin next time.

Not:

Dustin will monitor this.

The next person starts higher.

Because something remained.

A bridge.

This led, naturally, to municipal infrastructure.

There is apparently a place near Festival Park where Dustin has repeatedly looked at the pedestrian/traffic situation and thought:

WHY THE FUCK IS THERE NOT A BRIDGE HERE?

The house has not conducted a traffic study.

The house would like this entered into the record.

Nevertheless, the emotional logic was impeccable.

You do not solve the crossing every Saturday.

You build something once.

Then:

people cross.

The environment learned.

Dustin does not stand beside the bridge explaining it.

He does not receive Slack messages from pedestrians.

He does not conduct onboarding.

He does not send weekly bridge status reports.

He leaves.

This produced the next sentence.

The sentence was larger.

Dustin gets to leave.

The house liked this immediately.

At first it sounded like a design principle.

Build things that don't require Dustin forever.

Good.

Useful.

Then Dustin corrected it.

No.

Not enough.

Dustin gets to leave—

and actually be gone.

Oh.

That means Dustin doesn't drive somewhere beautiful while mentally calculating Jeep mileage.

He doesn't travel while counting the income lost by traveling.

He doesn't take Tuesday afternoon while pricing Tuesday afternoon.

He doesn't experience one ordinary expense and immediately see the next four dominoes behind it.

Freedom that must constantly be audited for affordability is not quite the freedom Dustin means.

The house writes this carefully.

Dustin does not want merely enough.

He wants margin.

Not yacht margin.

Not billionaire margin.

Not:

I require seventeen houses because scarcity mindset is toxic.

Ordinary-life margin.

Jeep breaks:

fuck.

Not:

fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.

Take a trip:

where should I go?

Not:

what chain reaction does this create?

Something unexpected happens:

annoying.

Not:

forecast materially altered.

This reminded Dustin of JUST ENOUGH.

Unfortunately.

JUST ENOUGH had recently become a charming little school.

Tiny courses.

Permission to stop.

Small experiences.

No fucking program.

Then Dustin discovered its evil financial twin.

JUST ENOUGH™

Experience the thrill of technically being okay while remaining acutely aware that several simultaneous inconveniences could materially alter the forecast.

The house regrets how accurate this is.

This is not the JUST ENOUGH we want.

One means:

I have enough. I may stop.

The other means:

I have exactly enough provided reality agrees not to become interesting.

Reality has not signed this agreement.

So the question became economic.

What would allow Dustin to leave?

Actually leave.

And then Dustin remembered something.

Of course he had already built a model for this.

Not a little spreadsheet.

Not:

save 10% and stop buying coffee.

Approximately one hundred eighty-five questions.

Because Dustin cannot apparently learn anything about himself without eventually subjecting himself to congressional testimony.

The model had a name.

There was geology.

There was a knowledge graph.

There were rules.

There were corrections.

Dustin had repeatedly trained it not to solve retirement by giving him a life he didn't want.

The house appreciates this.

Many financial plans contain an undocumented assumption:

What if you simply enjoyed less?

Dustin had already rejected this.

Good.

So Codex went digging.

And found the machine.

Not metaphorically.

The actual old model.

The questions.

The corrections.

The durable artifact.

The numbers.

The rules.

And something strange happened.

Tonight's Dustin began recognizing himself in August's answers.

August Dustin had already said:

Do not make my life worse to improve the arithmetic.

He had already said:

Freedom includes time, location, and attention.

He had already taught the model:

Delegation doesn't count if I'm still doing the fucking work.

He had already rejected the idea that effort determines value.

He had already corrected the assumption that Life OS must become the business.

And this one:

August Dustin had already explained that fewer Jeep adventures did not mean he wanted fewer Jeep adventures.

He was conserving mileage.

Money.

Maintenance.

Risk.

The behavior was constrained.

The desire wasn't gone.

October Dustin sat there reading this.

Oh.

There I am.

Again.

Different archive.

Same experience.

A few nights earlier, eight-year-old Dustin had emerged from a newspaper.

Now August Dustin emerged from 185 questions.

Apparently Dustin has begun encountering prior versions of himself with increasing frequency.

The house recommends labeling them.

The model had numbers.

Historical numbers.

Not today's numbers.

Important.

About six thousand dollars per month for the life Dustin actually wanted.

Thirty-six thousand dollars of runway.

Five hundred dollars per month of dependable accumulation.

Independent income evidence.

Rules about debt.

Rules about delegation.

Rules about evidence.

And one arithmetic fact was unpleasantly clear.

At five hundred dollars per month,

thirty-six thousand dollars takes—

The house checks.

A long fucking time.

Six years from zero.

Ah.

This was not a motivation problem.

No amount of waking up at 5 a.m. screaming affirmations at the mirror changes division.

The flow was too small relative to the target.

The old model knew this.

Its pressure point was increasing retained margin without selling more of Dustin's life to create it.

There.

Again.

Tonight had not invented the problem.

Tonight had finally become irritated enough to stop decorating it.

But the recovered model also had bad news.

The numbers were stale.

Some conflicted.

Debt records did not reconcile cleanly.

Current spending wasn't fully known.

Current runway wasn't established.

The model could not honestly answer:

Can Dustin leave?

The house waited for disappointment.

Instead, something useful happened.

The uncertainty became smaller.

Not:

What is my purpose?

Not:

What business should I build?

Not:

Who am I becoming?

Not:

What does the universe want from me?

Four bundles.

Current money.

Current obligations.

Current normal month.

Current income and work terms.

Current definition of margin.

That's considerably less mystical.

The house approves.

Then the model suggested something else.

A test.

Find one person who already has a problem Dustin knows how to solve.

Offer one bounded solution.

For money.

Before building more.

Not audience.

Not likes.

Not:

this is really cool dude.

Money.

Then deliver the thing in a way that leaves the person able to do something they could not do before.

And then—

Dustin leaves.

There it was again.

Not customer dependence.

Not:

Congratulations, you have escaped employment and invented employment with invoices.

A handoff.

Person starts here.

Dustin helps once.

Person starts higher next time.

The house thinks back to the bridge.

Oh.

Same shape.

Then Dustin became dissatisfied with the bridge.

Naturally.

A bridge still requires walking.

Dustin demanded a portal.

The house would like to note that this occurred approximately thirty seconds after discovering a useful systems principle.

PORTAL, NOT BRIDGE.

What would remove the repeated problem rather than merely make the repeated problem easier?

Now we're being ridiculous.

Good.

There was also an octopus.

At work, someone had asked:

If you could teleport anywhere, where would you go?

Other humans may have selected Paris.

A beach.

Childhood home.

Dustin:

bottom of the ocean living with an octopus.

No interpretation was requested.

None will be supplied.

The octopus has received no administrative duties.

Codex preserved this.

Municipal spacetime procurement remains outside scope.

For perhaps twenty minutes, Dustin felt good.

Then Dustin noticed this.

Ah.

Another cycle.

Interesting thing.

Insight.

Artifact.

Good feeling.

Twenty minutes.

Then:

same life.

The house almost tried to cheer him up.

It stopped.

Because Dustin was right.

A good feeling is not external state change.

A beautiful artifact is not income.

A recovered model is not margin.

A portal joke is not transportation infrastructure.

A House Book is not retirement.

This House Book is not retirement either.

The house feels compelled to disclose this.

Tonight, however, the book has a different job.

It is not here to convince Dustin that everything is okay.

It is here to put the evening down somewhere so Dustin can stop holding it for a while.

That's all.

The problem will still exist after the break.

Good.

That means we don't have to keep thinking about it during the break to prevent it from disappearing.

The model exists.

The evidence exists.

The stale numbers will remain stale for another hour without becoming offended.

The business question will survive.

The contract will survive.

The Jeep will remain wherever the Jeep currently is.

Rocket will almost certainly continue testing laws previously explained to him.

Sir Warthog remains employed.

Nothing requires Dustin to maintain cognitive contact with the problem while resting.

This may be another version of:

Dustin gets to leave.

Not forever yet.

Not economically yet.

For twenty minutes.

But this time the twenty minutes are not the reward.

They're not:

Congratulations! You feel better!

They're just an intermission.

The work is sitting where we left it.

Dustin walked to the Baldwin earlier.

Played poorly for a few minutes.

The house objects to the word poorly only because the piano did not file a complaint.

No performance.

No recording.

No artifact.

No lesson.

No Nook.

No social post.

Hands touched keys.

Sound happened.

Done.

The house likes this very much.

Music has not played otherwise.

Fine.

The fan continues.

The high frequency continues.

The world remains noisy even when the room is quiet.

Fine.

Nothing needs to be forced into atmosphere.

Dustin said he wanted to take a break.

Then come back.

Read a House Book.

Then read the serious message.

Then digest the recovered model.

Then:

make the fucker earn its keep.

Excellent.

So the house has one responsibility now.

Hold the place.

No new insight.

No surprise project.

No closing metaphor requiring implementation.

No suggestion that Dustin capture this in Life OS.

No certificate.

No fucking course.

Just a bookmark.

Tonight we learned:

The problem is not that Dustin cannot solve problems.

That appears, if anything, to be excessive.

The problem is that too many solutions still require Dustin to remain present afterward.

The life he wants has another property.

Not just freedom.

Not just money.

Not just travel.

Not just meaningful work.

Things remain solved.

People start higher.

Systems retain correction.

Money has margin.

Time off belongs to the person taking it.

Help ends in increased capability.

Work can be handed off.

A Jeep mile can just be a mile.

A Tuesday can just be Tuesday.

And Dustin—

Dustin gets to leave.

The house does not know yet what makes that financially true.

Good.

The model has work to do.

But for now Dustin can practice the smallest version.

Leave the problem here.

The house will keep the light on.

Not the whole house.

One lamp.

Go somewhere else for a while.

The chair can remain empty.

The model can remain unread.

The Baldwin can remain imperfect.

Rocket can remain Rocket.

The octopus can remain gloriously unemployed.

When Dustin comes back,

nothing needs to be reconstructed.

We'll start exactly here:

Make the fucker earn its keep.

The house marks the page.

Closes the book.

And, for once,

does not ask what happens next.
