# The Acknowledgment

*THE MISSING CREDIT · October 19, 2026 · Night Five*

Facilities forwarded the roof instruction again.

The prohibition was intact. So was the destination. The line that had said who must not investigate had become very good at not saying.

An acknowledgment arrived before the message had finished leaving.

RECEIVED.

No signature.

Production printed it and put it in the empty chair.

The House read over its shoulder.

“Efficient,” it said.

At the end of the hall, she rested her head against his shoulder. He could feel the small weight of it through his shirt. He liked that the room still contained things he could account for.

Her hand in his.

Her breath at his collar.

The key on the white saucer beside them.

They had put it there together.

The brass plate on the door had four small screws and no name. A clean rectangle in a House that had otherwise become very particular about remembering.

Behind the door, the lock turned.

Neither of them moved toward it.

The gap opened just enough to make the darkness look close.

He felt her fingers tighten. The key stayed where it was.

From inside, in a voice that knew how little distance there should be between them:

“You can let go now.”

Beside him, her mouth was closed.

He did not let go.

Back at the table, Production turned the acknowledgment over.

There was nothing on the other side.

The House laid it facedown anyway.
